Civil Motions:  All hearings on civil motions will be held via Zoom video webinar unless the court determines that an in-person hearing would aid the court’s understanding of the parties’ positions.  Counsel may seek an in-person proceeding by filing a request at least two weeks before the hearing that sets forth the reasons supporting the request. 

Case Management Conferences:  All case management conferences will be held via Zoom video webinar unless the court determines that an in-person proceeding would aid the court.

Settlement Conferences:  Settlement planning sessions will take place by telephone.  Most settlement conferences will take place by Zoom at this time.  The court will determine whether a settlement conference will be conducted in person, and will seek the parties’ input as part of the settlement planning process.   For Zoom settlement conferences, all counsel must ensure that their participants have downloaded the Zoom application onto a device with a working camera and microphone.  Counsel shall do a test run with all of their participants prior to the settlement conference to eliminate all equipment-based problems.  Audio-only participation is prohibited.   Unless otherwise indicated, Judge Ryu will conduct settlement conferences in her designated non-public Zoom Meeting “room.”   The Zoom Meeting ID is available on Judge Ryu’s webpage as well as the ECF docket entry for the scheduling of the settlement conference.

COURT SCHEDULE:

Criminal Law and Motion:  During the regular criminal duty calendar.  Please contact Ivy Garcia at (510) 637-3639 to request a special setting.

Civil Law and Motion:  2nd & 4th Thursdays of the month at 1:00 p.m.  Parties need not reserve a hearing date, but should confirm Magistrate Judge Ryu's availability in the Scheduling Notes available on her webpage at http://www.cand.uscourts.gov/dmr.

Case Management Conferences:  1st, 3rd, and 5th Wednesdays at 1:30 p.m.

Judgment Debtor Examinations:  Wednesdays at 9:00 a.m. (on Criminal Duty months) or 9:30 a.m. (on non-Criminal Duty months)                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                             

Settlement Conferences:  The court will issue scheduling orders for all settlement conferences referred to Judge Ryu.  Please contact Ivy Garcia at (510) 637-3639 if you have questions that are not addressed by the scheduling order. 

********NOTICE RE: UNAVAILABLE DATES FOR CIVIL LAW AND MOTION CALENDAR*******

Chief Magistrate Judge Donna M. Ryu will not have a Civil Law and Motion Calendar on Thursday, December 26, 2024 at 1:00 p.m.

Chief Magistrate Judge Donna M. Ryu will not have a Civil Law and Motion Calendar on Thursday, January 9, 2025 but will have a specially set Civil Law and Motion Calendar on Friday, January 31, 2025 at 1:00 p.m.

********NOTICE ON CRIMINAL DUTY COVERAGES********

      1.    On November 29, 2024, Magistrate Judge Thomas S. Hixson  will preside over a consolidated criminal duty calendar for all three divisions.  Criminal paper review are  unaffected. 

      2.     For the last two weeks of the year, (week of  December 23, 2024 and December 30, 2024) San Francisco judges will preside over a consolidated districtwide criminal duty calendar as follows:

• 12/23/24-12/24/24; 12/26/24-12/27/24: Magistrate Judge Lisa J. Cisneros
• 12/30/24-12/31/24: Magistrate Judge Sallie Kim
• 1/2/25-1/3/25: Magistrate Judge Peter H. Kang
• Criminal paper review:  San Jose criminal paper review is unaffected.  San Francisco will cover criminal paper review for both San Francisco and Oakland from 12/22/2024 through 1/3/2025.  During that time, Oakland criminal paper must be submitted to the San Francisco duty box: SF_MJcrimduty@cand.uscourts.gov

********NOTICE OF UNAVAILABILITY********

Please take notice that Chief Magistrate Judge Donna M. Ryu will not be available on the following days.  The court will not be in session during these period of unavailability.  If urgency requires, counsel in any case assigned or referred to Magistrate Judge Ryu may request a hearing before the General Duty Judge pursuant to Civil Local Rule 7-1(c).
